Computational Physicist - Fluid and Kinetic Modeling of Z Pinch Plasmas

Zap Energy is currently looking for an experienced Computational Physicist to assist in developing fluid and kinetic plasma models that will guide understanding of Z pinch operation. Working in collaboration with the Theory & Modeling team, the Physicist will be responsible for developing computational tools and techniques that contribute to efforts to model Z pinch physics, including pulsed power flow, compression physics, shock heating, turbulent transport, plasma sheaths, atomic and molecular reactions, two-fluid effects, 3D effects, and other phenomena.  

The high-level objective of the modeling is to provide a predictive understanding of the physical processes that determine plasma density and temperature, and to build predictive understanding that will guide experimental design and operation. The ideal candidate is an organized, inventive problem solver, and an effective team player with proven technical ability and a strong work ethic.

  • Develop and implement modeling that captures the essential physics in the formation and sustainment of the sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch 

  • Attend conferences and produce publications describing research results 

  • Reports to the Zap Energy Head of Theory & Modeling 



  • Masters in plasma physics, fluid dynamics, turbulence, combustion or closely related field 

  • Detailed knowledge of scientific computing, including direct experience with relevant algorithms such as CFD, MHD, continuum kinetic modeling, PIC, etc. 

  • Excellent coding skills, including C++, Fortran, Python, etc. 

  • Excellent written and communication skills 

  • Demonstrated publication record 


  • PhD in plasma physics, fluid dynamics, turbulence, combustion or closely related field 

  • Experience validating computational models to experiment 

  • Experience with kinetic plasma physics and modeling 

  • Experience with pulsed power circuits and design 

  • Experience with atomic and molecular physics of plasmas or related combustion reaction chemistry 

  • Experience in an industry setting using modeling to support product development 

  • Experience with sub-grid modeling of turbulent transport 

  • Expertise in high-performance computing workflows 

  • Familiarity with software-development practices including the Git version-control system

The estimated salary range for this position is $100 to 150k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications. Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.
