Director – Operations, Environmental Liability Management

This position will report to the Senior Director of Environmental Liability Management and is responsible for overseeing site-specific remediation teams in Pennsylvania and Montana, as well as providing input to Talen’s strategy for dealing with environmental liabilities, particularly those related to coal ash. The Operations team of the Environmental Liability Department is responsible for successful execution of remediation work, with safety and environmental/regulatory compliance as the first priority. As the leader of the Operations team, the position will have direct reports at various work sites or with responsibilities at specific work locations. The Director will be accountable for the success of each team, and for the remediation work. To be successful, strong leadership and execution skills are a must, as well as the ability to successfully collaborate with internal environmental and finance support groups, and external partners and consultants.

Location Allentown, PA (on-site)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead team of site leads and support staff responsible for remediation work or wastewater treatment at current and former plant sites
  • Oversee planning and execution of remediation work at various sites, including supporting the development of budgets and/or schedules.
  • Work closely with group or corporate environmental and financial resources to define work plans or execute site work.
  • Interact, as required, with regulators/government agencies/government officials on interests involving environmental liabilities
  • Work closely with CCR Marketing to explore beneficial use options which may reduce or offset project spend.
  • Work closely with external consultants and other partners to execute work or explore work options.
  • Develop methodologies to measure and track project performance using appropriate tools and techniques, making adjustments as needed, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Up to 25% travel at times to manage teams and provide project support
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Candidate Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience managing environmental liabilities
  • Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience dealing with environmental agencies and government entities preferred.
  • Strong project management and related experience.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and extremely resourceful.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with coal ash impoundments, including closing ash sites in place or by removal.
  • Knowledge of ash characteristics, ash handling, dewatering, groundwater monitoring or civil/structural engineering preferred.
