Position Summary

The Director Retirement will provide direction for the strategy, design, administration, implementation, compliance, and communication of the retirement (pension and 401(k)) programs and plans, including: managing qualified retirement programs and vendors, ensuring operational excellence of plan administration, developing and executing the retirement strategy, coordinating plan compliance (annual reporting, plan documents, SPDs, etc), resolving retirement escalations, and assisting with union negotiations, rate cases, and plan audits. The Director of Retirement will also provide direction for the Financial Wellness Program by regularly evaluating/implementing financial wellness and education opportunities and managing vendor relationships.


  • Provide leadership to the Retirement Team including managing staff, work, and employee development
  • Manage work related to administering retirement plans including, daily operations, ERISA and regulatory compliance, reporting, research, union negotiations, audit support and plan-related communications
  • Continually evaluate retirement plans to ensure that they align with company goals and objectives
  • Provide strategic leadership and consulting related to retirement strategy and program design, vendors and systems, new legislation and trends.
  • Manage the implementation of plan/program design changes including, preparing and presenting recommendations to upper level management, working with key internal and external stakeholders, and developing and distributing communications
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders related to budgeting and forecasting and plan funding and investments
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation and review of financial wellness program offerings and education products, including monitoring engagement in the programs, promoting existing programs and opportunities, and introducing and promoting new tools and wellness opportunities
  • Manage vendor relationships for all retirement plans, the financial wellness programs, and actuarial and consulting services and manage all relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Provide plan participants with guidance, support and education related to the plans

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • In addition to bachelor's degree, seven (7) years minimum of related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in HR, Finance/Accounting, or Math
  • 10+ years of experience working with retirement programs
  • Prior experience leading/managing a team
  • Project management experience
  • Actuary/Actuarial Certifications or (e.g., ASA)
  • Certified Financial Planner, CEBS

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to Duke Energy Plaza.
