This position can be filled at either Engineer I or Engineer II level, based on the qualifications of the selected applicant. 

Job Summary

The Engineer I This position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. The Systems Operations Engineering (SOE) Engineer primarily supports the Duke Energy Florida Energy Control Center functions. This includes work necessary to comply with all applicable Reliability Standards for Bulk Electric Systems and Operating/Interconnection Agreements. 

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer I)

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

The Engineer II This position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

This position provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise.

The engineers in our group support the DEF Energy Control Center and the System Operators who operate the bulk electric system. Major duties include performing system reliability studies, developing and maintaining system operating procedures, and ensuring that DEF complies with NERC reliability standards that apply to the Transmission Operator and Balancing Authority functions.

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer II):

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience. Experience must have been attained at a "Valued Contributor" performance level.  

Responsibilities:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Perform operational planning studies and reliability assessments--working with others in Systems Operations; and counterparts with neighboring companies

  • Resolve operating issues with all stakeholders including generation entities, neighboring systems, and various load serving entities connected to the transmission system 

  • Participate in pre/post-operating assessment studies of system performance 

  • Provide emergency support during storms and operating emergencies 

  • Provide support of the Energy Management System by ensuring accuracy of the transmission network modeling and equipment ratings

  • Facilitate ongoing Duke Energy compliance with FERC and NERC requirements including development and review of appropriate documentation

  • Represent Duke Energy on various industry Regional Entity working groups

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.  

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations. 

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.  

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
