Position Summary:

The Manager, ES Business Support position oversees the management of all Energy Services (ES) Business Support for Duke Energy.  This position supports the execution of projects within the Energy Services portfolio (distributed generation, resiliency & electric vehicle infrastructure,  Federal, turnkey). Support responsibilities include but are not limited to portfolio management, strategic planning, business intelligence analysis and reporting, contract management, P&L management and financial reporting, and new product development across all jurisdictions and multiple legal entities.  This position works cross functionally to support the development, execution and management of a portfolio strategy to drive profitability,  reduce overall business costs and enhance customer satisfaction. Additional responsibilities may include but are not limited to continuous process review and improvement, marketing planning and implementation, ongoing governance of group standards and guidelines, P&L review, financial reporting and accounting, and long-term financial planning.  The Manager will support projects within the ES portfolio that provide projects and services to Duke’s regulated and non-regulated commercial, industrial and institutional customers, both inside and outside the Duke, regulated service territory. This organization has employees, contingent employees and vendor staff located geographically across the Duke’s service territories. The Manager, ES Business Support works with the Design Engineering, Structuring, Credit Risk, Project Execution, and Service & Reliability Managers, as well as the Director of Energy Services to provide P&L analysis, contract governance, and financial planning and oversight with an overall responsibility for delivering projects of $100 million annual revenue , managing an annual capital budget of approximately $50 million, and an operating budget over $20 million.


Management and supervisory oversight of the Energy Services operating portfolio, financial reporting and key performance metrics, financial planning and analysis, and management of financial support staff

  • Lead a team that actively manages an operating portfolio >$100mm in distributed energy and infrastructure assets and engages in Federal and turnkey projects across the Duke footprint to support both regulated and unregulated projects

  • Lead financial reporting and analysis responsibility and management of a P&L with >$100mm in annual revenue; provide routine updates on key performance metrics and analysis of the business to senior leadership

  • Facilitate the development and awareness of the strategic plan for Energy Services (including new business models and strategic initiatives).

  • Stay current with corporate strategies and investments.

  • Help coordinate product/service roadmaps for strategic initiative implementation.

  • Work with the Director to develop, communicate and execute financial plans, business processes, budgets and metrics for tracking the team success.

  • Responsible for creating, monitoring and reporting on annual budget, forecasts and and 5-year plans to deliver targeted financial results in total and for each jurisdictional market.

  • Responsible for monthly business intelligence analysis and reporting.

  • Work closely with all  functional groups (business development, origination & structuring, execution & operations) across the  ES team, along with Duke’s financial planning and accounting teams, to budget and provide financial visibility of status throughout the year.

  • Accountable for meeting P&L, financial growth, customer satisfaction and regulatory objectives for product & service portfolio.

Contract management

  • Coordinate across the ES team functional groups to manage contract governance, validation of modeled assumptions (budgeted/modeled vs. as built), customer engagement, contract renewals and portfolio level reporting

  • Perform risk evaluation, analyses and reporting requests at the discretion of ES team leadership

  • Track per project returns against modeled IRR and adjusting model for future deal development.

  • Directly engage with customers and negotiate contracts or provide support in contract negotiations

Compliance management

  • Provide governance of all federal, state, and county licenses

  • Manage environmental compliance for applicable Federal and State laws including EPA RICE-NESHAP

  • Ensure all vendors meet corporate requirements for safety.

New product/service development and product management

  • Lead group that manages a profitable product & service portfolio in collaboration with key internal stakeholders, customers, and vendors to create alliances and execute successful customer initiatives.

  • Responsible for coordinating the efforts around new product/service development, Implementation, and product/service management.

  • Develop product and service enhancements to improve market effectiveness and support new program initiatives. Provide support and expertise to development of new products and services for customers.  Includes giving direction to others to ensure that customer needs are satisfied and products meet financial goals.

  • Standardize portfolio across all jurisdictions where feasible.

  • Form strategic partnerships with industry groups, community leaders and product vendors to support development and demonstration of the Energy Services strategy, products and services.

  • Customer Satisfaction:  Develop, communicate, execute and adjust market plans to achieve defined customer satisfaction targets. 

  • Investigate and pilot new technologies, delivery channels and product extensions.

  • Capture and ensure follow-up on leads generated by campaign initiatives, events, and communications.

  • Helps facilitates the promotion and awareness of the products and services provided by Energy Services both internal and external to the Company (including trade shows, case studies, web, and social media).

Team leadership and development

  • Develop Energy Services Business Support team members by utilizing personal development planning tools and position team and individuals for growth opportunities and special assignments.

  • Create a team of collaboration always looking for support and development opportunities.

  • Responsible for staffing and training a high powered support team to enable business development to focus on customer calls and interactions.

  • Responsible for individual and team training plans for personal and professional growth.

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Marketing or Engineering

  • In addition to required degree, seven (7) or more years related work experience

  • In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND seven (7) or more years related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND ten (10) or more years related work experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or comparable degree

  • Experience in asset management, portfolio management, preferrable management of a portfolio of energy assets with financial reporting responsibility

  • Supervisory and leadership experience, ideally within the energy and/or power sectors  

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in leading a team focused on the management of a portfolio of operating energy assets (distributed generation, infrastructure, renewables, conventional power, etc.)

  • Highly motivated self starter with the ability and confidence to work cross functionally and across multiple levels of leadership within the organization to make and execute business decisions, at times, with limited information

  • Familiarity with project development and execution phases and timelines; planning requirements, contractual structures, financial analyses and development stages

  • Knowledge of commercial, regulated utility and Federal contracts, including financing agreements, supplier/vendor agreements, regulated tariff constructs, Federal contracting structures and similar contractual documents

  • Understanding of market research techniques and tools.

  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, risk management and financial evaluation skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including written, verbal and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated  leadership and managerial skills.

  • Ability to represent the company as spokesperson and company executive in public forums.

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of Duke management.

  • Ability to effectively operate at the executive level within customer organizations.

  • Ability to develop and execute near-term and long-term financial plans.

  • Ability to effectively manage third party resources, including suppliers/vendors, contractors and direct engagement with customers.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects at a given time under established deadlines.

  • Self-directed, highly motivated team leader.

  • In depth knowledge of financial reporting principals, including but not limited to GAAP accounting, financial statement analysis and financial reporting metrics

  • Experience and proven ability to negotiate contracts, influence internal and external stakeholders and independently resolve conflicts  with limited supervision or direct control.

  • Working knowledge of competitive marketplace. Proven ability to analyze market data and develop strategic solutions to customer problems to achieve desired results

  • Knowledge of various technology platform systems such as Microsoft Office, Salesforce, Procore, Maximo and financial reporting databases

  • Demonstrated innovation and creative abilities.

  • Ability to effectively resolve issues in a matrix organization.

  • Ability to effectively handle highly stressful situations.

  • Customer engagement experience or relationship management experience within industry.  Examples: Account Management, Marketing or Sales.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid –Ideal location is Charlotte, NC based but can sit at any office within Duke Energy service territory
