This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for design of new and existing substations and related equipment.
Primary area of responsibility for site design in support of substation design projects includes:
Manage/Oversight of site design consultants that will provide design support. This includes review of plans and design documents (such as construction specifications, cost estimates, etc.) to ensure compliance with DEP standards. Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Understand/Knowledge of various engineering design standards that includes erosion control, stormwater pipe, stormwater management (SCMs), etc. and the associated calculations. Knowledge of municipal requirements and operations, such as UDOs, SUP/CUP, in relation to zoning, planning and development. Familiar with permitting process for DOT, FAA, State and local stormwater permitting regulations, CAMA, wetlands, etc. Utilize various tools, such as AutoCad Civil 3D, Microstation Bluebeam/Adobe PDF programs and other related sources, such as Microsoft O365 suite of apps.
Secondary responsibilities to include work on Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans to ensure substations are being compliant to applicable environmental regulations.
The ideal candidate brings strong experience with the site design proficiency area and a desire for training and development in the physical design proficiency area.
Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (approximately 25%); must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies. This job is classified as “hybrid” with in office requirement of 2 days minimum per week.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (not engineering technology program) from an ABET accredited program AND/OR state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience, with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Key Skills/Experience/Certifications
Ability to obtain NC/SC PE seal within 6 months if not already registered in either state.
If internal applicant, experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets", “Valued Contributor”, or better in final two (2) Performance Impact ratings.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in the electric utility industry
Experience with preparing Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans
Transmission experience with design/construction of electric power substations
Understanding of basic principles of project management
Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
