This position is responsible for creating and modifying high and medium voltage (500kV, 230kV, 115kV, 24kV and 13kV) design standards for use in Duke Energy Progress capital project designs.  Looking for someone that can communicate and gather feedback from across a wide spectrum of work areas in our company and then translate that feedback into improved and new standards.

Job Responsibilities

The Production Standards Engineering team sets the technical direction and philosophy for design of the Duke Energy Progress transmission grid.  This includes all aspects of engineering such as transmission line, substation physical, and protection and control areas.  Work experience in any industry involving engineering design or construction management will be considered for this role as deep knowledge of high voltage parameters is not required.  (Training will be provided!)

Create and modify engineering drawings and templates to establish the standard for engineering designs for capital projects.  CADD tool (MicroStation, AutoCadd, Bluebeam, Inventor, ACADe, Civil3D) user experience is a plus but not necessary as we offer training in that aspect of the role.

Collaborate with the production engineering team and Construction and Maintenance teams to get feedback on designs and details of how we assemble the pieces and parts and get them to work properly during construction.  This will involve being in the field during construction evolutions and in the office with the engineering teams during design evolutions.

Study and understand long term service life probabilities, cost impacts and reliability of parts and system designs used in engineering.  Assist in making decisions on parts and systems that would be the best choice given system parameters listed above.

Determine and make decisions on how our designs will respond to code requirements.  Examples include National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Underwriters Laboratory (UL), etc. as needed.  Spending time reading, understanding and communicating codes will be a requirement.  Understanding how the codes will impact design calculations will also be required.  No prior knowledge or experience necessary in this area.

Work within the materials acquisition tool to get standard parts identified, created, and approved in the system for use by engineering design teams
