Fuel Staff Accountant

This position will be a staff-level accountant in the Alabama Power Fuel Accounting and Revenue Reporting department and will be filled depending on the skills and abilities of the successful candidate. This position will have responsibility for the following:

  • Calculate fuel and purchased power regulatory clause recovery for review by accounting management and filing with the Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC)
  • Prepare monthly journals for fuel, purchased power, wholesale revenue and joint owner processes
  • Analyze and report on Income Statement/balance sheet/cash flow results for presentation at management meetings
  • Perform account reconciliations and prepare operating reports and schedules
  • Perform Joint Owner billings and reporting
  • Prepare financial reporting information related to the fuel, wholesale revenues, purchased power and joint owner processes, such as Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings
  • Provide reports and coordinate responses to APSC inquiries

This position will work directly with Alabama Power Company's (APC) Accounting Finance and Treasury (AFT) organization, AFT management, other system departments, other operational management, internal auditors, external auditors, and any other providers or users of accounting data to ensure compliance with emerging and changing issues. We will consider teleworking options for locations outside of Birmingham, with the understanding that frequent trips to Birmingham will be required. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Experience & Education:

  • BS or BA in Accounting is required
  • CPA and an advanced degree are preferred
  • 2+ years of work experience in an accounting discipline 
  • Experience with a public accounting firm is desirable

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and ability to apply GAAP and SEC rules and reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Committee of Sponsoring Organization framework
  • Knowledge of FERC System of Accounts and rate making concepts a plus
  • Ability to research and understand accounting transactions and regulatory issues and provide sound guidance
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Ability to communicate accounting applications and analysis to non-financial personnel
  • Exhibit strong initiative and require minimal supervision
  • Must handle confidential and sensitive information
