Job Description:

This posting is for a position in the Brunswick and Oconee Nuclear Design (BOND) group. BOND is part of the Nuclear Fuels Engineering (NFE) division located at Duke Energy's General Office in Charlotte, NC. The BOND group is responsible for designing and analyzing fuel cycles for Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC, and Oconee Nuclear Station in Seneca, SC. BOND is also responsible for nuclear criticality safety for all six of Duke Energy's nuclear power plants in NC and SC.

Group responsibilities and duties include:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Participates on or leads reload design teams to design fuel cycles.

  • Develops and verifies analyses associated with fuel cycle designs.

  • Develops, qualifies, and maintains in-house codes used in support of fuel cycle designs.

  • Qualifies vendor codes used in support of fuel cycle designs.

  • Interfaces with fuel vendor as part of the reload design process and for emergent issue support.

  • Interfaces with site Reactor Engineering personnel to provide technical support as needed.

  • Performs nuclear criticality safety reviews and analyses.

  • Accommodates emergent work and effectively multi-task while keeping supervisor informed.

  • Follows NRC approved methodologies to perform reload analyses.

  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other groups within NFE, plant Engineering and Operations.

  • Participates in technical training activities such as attending technical seminars, computer code training, and group specific training classes.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Desired Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate or Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstration of ability to organize and self-manage multiple tasks.

  • Unix and/or Linux workstation experience.

  • Computer programming experience (FORTRAN/Python/VBA/etc.)

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment.

  • Flexible working schedule is available, typically four 10-hour days.

  • Some travel to other Duke sites, other industry sites, and industry conferences/meetings.

  • Occasional weekend work and overtime support of emergent activities and refueling outages.

Specific Requirements

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed

  • Office and plant environments.

  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.

  • Occasional overnight travel.
