This position is responsible for providing fleet technical support for the dry spent fuel storage and spent fuel management program. The position is located in the corporate office in Charlotte and the individual will work within the Fuel Storage and Supply section of the Nuclear Fuel Engineering organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engineering support for dry fuel storage activities in the fleet including resolution of technical issues, interface with site personnel during loading activities and evaluation of system and site design changes
  • Dry fuel storage system fabrication technical support including review of fabrication drawings, specs, procedures and nonconformances
  • Technical interface with dry storage system vendors for system and equipment
  • Onsite oversight for system (canister and overpack) fabrication, dry fuel storage loading campaigns and Independent Spent Fuel Storage expansion projects
  • Qualification and selection of spent fuel to be stored in the various dry storage systems throughout the fleet
  • Coordination of 10 CFR 72.48 reviews, 72.212 updates and dry storage system certificate of compliance changes
  • Participation in industry dry storage groups (such as NEI, EPRI, Orano and NAC)
  • Coordination with dry storage program managers from the other nuclear stations to identify fleet and industry best practices and to facilitate consistent fleet implementation
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the design, licensing and operation of the dry fuel storage systems in use throughout the Duke nuclear fleet
  • Perform TRACWORK Special Nuclear Material database updates and annual reports per NRC protocols

Basic/Required Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Nuclear, Civil, or Mechanical engineering degree
  • Knowledge of spent nuclear fuel storage systems
  • Internship working in the utility industry or nuclear related field
  • Computer skills – proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel at a minimum
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments

Job Specific Requirements:

  • Able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to Duke Energy’s nuclear plants and participate in company’s fitness for duty program
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Work Conditions:

  • Hybrid, normal general office work environment majority of the time. Some travel will be involved
